Information for slaughter tree

Prohibition on felling a tree

Throughout the territory of the Municipality of the Village of Val-David, it is prohibited to cut down a tree , except in the following cases:

  • Damage observed to foundations or property, underground pipes or sidewalks or paving caused by roots or the risk of falling branches;

  • Risks to power lines and other overhead wires assessed by competent authorities;

  • Diseases, death of the tree or presenting risks to the safety or health of the public;

  • For the realization of works or works for public purposes;

  • To ensure clearance of traffic signs under the Highway Safety Code or in the case of an obstruction of the street;

  • In the case of a passive solar house, the cutting of trees to the south of the building to a maximum depth of ten (10) meters measured from the plane of the facade concerned;

  • A tree located at:
    - Less than three (3) meters from a main building, a sanitary facility or a swimming pool
    - Less than 1.5 meters from an accessory building;
    - Less than one (1) meter from a balcony, gallery, access driveway,
    - Less than one (1) meter from a base-mounted transformer or electrical equipment.

A permit is required for felling trees.

Tree planting obligation

For any new use or change of use, the owner must plant trees, in areas not used for paved or built developments, within twelve (12) months following the end of the construction work under the conditions following:

  • Obligation to plant one (1) tree in the front yard for residential uses;

  • Obligation to plant at least one (1) tree for each 7.5 meters of frontage in the front yard for uses other than residential;

  • Obligation to plant one (1) tree for each twenty-five (25) square meters of land area in secondary front, side and rear yards for all uses other than residential.

Tree pruning

It is prohibited to damage or prune a tree in such a way as to cause dieback, disease of the tree or death of the tree. It is also prohibited to prune a tree so that 50% of the trunk is bare, measured from average ground level.

Procedure to obtain a certificate of authorization for tree felling

  • Complete the application form and drop it off at the town hall or send it by email to: environnement@valdavid.com

  • The designated manager will go to the field to assess the condition of the tree to be felled.

  • The decision will then be sent to you:

  • if the request is accepted, you will have to come and collect the authorization certificate from the town hall;

  • If the request is refused, you will be informed verbally and a written notice will be issued and sent by mail.
