Mirabel felling permit

In urban areas, it is prohibited to cut down a tree unless you have obtained written authorization from the City.

An authorization may be granted under the zoning by-law (U-2300) for the following reasons:

o the tree is broken, overturned or in a state of decline;

o the tree is attacked by a disease or a harmful insect;

o the tree is dead;

o the tree represents a real risk for public safety or the integrity of a building;

o the tree is the cause of clearly demonstrated material damage to a building or infrastructure;

o following a slaughter order issued by the court or by a government officer.

No authorization will be given for the following reasons:

o the tree is the cause of the loss of sap, leaves, needles, fruits, seeds or nuts;

o the tree is host to insects or animals that are not harmful to its health;

o the tree casts shade or is located near a building;

o for the sole reason that it will be replaced by another tree.

The City may refuse to issue a felling authorization if the reasons given are considered irrelevant. In general, any tree authorized for felling must be replaced by a tree of 50 mm or 75 mm in diameter, depending on its diameter and its location on the land. In addition, special protection measures apply in certain sectors and in riparian areas, where spaces must be maintained in a natural state with a minimum number of trees.
