Information for slaughter tree

In order to preserve a minimum number of trees on each property, the City of Lavaltrie has adopted regulations for tree felling within its territory. These regulations apply to all citizens, businesses, or institutions wishing to cut down a tree on their property.

When to apply for a tree felling authorization certificate:

  • To fell a tree with a diameter of 10 cm or more, measured at 1.3 m from the ground.
  • To top a tree or prune it, removing more than 25% of its volume.

The reasons justifying the felling of a tree and the issuance of a permit are as follows:

  • The tree is dead or suffering from an incurable disease. The request must be submitted between May 15 and October 15 to assess its health condition.
  • The tree poses a danger to the safety of people or property. However, if pruning can make the preservation of the tree safe, it cannot be felled.
  • The tree is causing damage to public or private property.
  • The tree obstructs the execution of public works.
  • The tree must be felled to allow the realization of a construction or development project authorized by the City.
  • The minimum number of trees is maintained after felling. A felling permit is still required.

Attention! The following reasons do not constitute grounds for felling a tree:

  • The shedding of leaves, twigs, flowers, or fruits.
  • The presence of roots on the surface of the soil and their impact.
  • The presence of non-harmful insects or animals.
  • The shade caused by the tree.
  • Odors, sap exudate, honeydew, or pollen emitted by the tree.
  • The proximity of the tree to a fence, shed, etc.
