Information for slaughter tree

Mandatory Authorization Certificate

You must obtain an authorization certificate before cutting down a tree.

You can make your request by:

  • Visiting our website at vsj.ca;
  • Calling the Citizen Center at 450 569-5000.

No fees will be charged if the tree meets any of the criteria below. Otherwise, a fee of $50 may be imposed.

Eligibility CriteriaCutting down is permitted in the following cases:

  • The tree is dead;
  • The tree is afflicted with an incurable disease;
  • The tree constitutes a nuisance or causes damage to property;
  • The tree poses a danger to the safety or health of citizens.

Required Documents

  • A description of the tree(s) subject to the request (with photos);
  • A copy of the location certificate indicating the location of the trees to be cut down;
  • A report, produced by a member in good standing of a professional order qualified in the field (arborist), concluding that the condition of the tree justifies the issuance of a certificate (if necessary);
  • A report from an arborist in the case where the cutting down of a tree is justified by the fact that it is afflicted with an incurable disease (if necessary);
  • A power of attorney (if necessary).

ReplantingIf your cutting request is approved, the City of Saint-Jérôme may ask you to replant one or more trees. In this case, it will require proof of purchase or photos. Note that it is prohibited to plant the following tree species within 10 meters of a main building, a pool, a street right-of-way, a water or sewer pipe, a well, or a septic system:

  • Silver Maple;
  • Giguère Maple;
  • Poplar;
  • Willow;
  • Aspen;
  • Ash.

Furthermore, every tree must be planted at a minimum distance of:

  • 3 meters from an electrical pole;
  • 3 meters from a street lamp;
  • 2 meters from a fire hydrant;
  • 2 meters from water and sewer networks;
  • 2 meters from any electrical or telephone cable;
  • 3 meters from any high-voltage electrical cable;
  • 1.5 meters from a fire hose connection (siamese);
  • 0.5 meters from a street right-of-way (1.5 meters at an intersection).
