Charlemagne felling permit

Information for slaughter tree

You are not permitted to cut down a tree with a diameter exceeding 10 centimeters (measured at 1.2 meters from the ground) without prior authorization. Authorization can only be granted under the following conditions:

a) The tree is dead or afflicted with an incurable disease; b) The tree poses a danger to the safety of individuals; c) The tree constitutes a nuisance to the growth of neighboring trees; d) The tree causes damage to public or private property; e) The felling of the tree is necessary for public works or for the execution of a construction project authorized by the municipality.

Any tree felled under this provision must be replaced in accordance with Article 58.

Landscaping / Implementation Deadline (Article 58) Owners must plant a minimum of one tree per 300 square meters of land. Some areas require more landscaping and the planting of a greater number of trees (see specification grids). The planting of these trees must be carried out within the front yard, unless it is proven that it cannot be done considering the environment. The selected trees must have a minimum height of 1.5 meters (with a diameter exceeding 5 cm) at the time of planting. No tree may be planted less than 1 meter from the front property line. The chosen species must comply with the regulations, and the planting location must take into account their growth. Fire Hydrant. Planting trees within a distance of less than 1.5 meters from a fire hydrant is prohibited.

December 2017 Trees / Specific Provisions.

Ash trees are prohibited within the city's territory. The following tree species [trembling aspen (populus tremuloides), white poplar (populus alba), Lombardy poplar (populus nigra fastigiata), eastern cottonwood (populus deltoides), willow (all high-stem willows), silver maple (acer saccharinum), and American elm (ulmus americana)] are allowed to be planted only if the following conditions are met: a) more than 45 meters from any lot line, building, or septic tank; b) more than 10 meters from a well or the centerline of a water main, sewer, or storm drain.

Documents and information required to submit an authorization certificate request:

  • Identify the tree or trees to be cut down;
  • Demonstrate that the tree meets one of the conditions allowing its felling.
